What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the third largest health care profession worldwide, after medicine and dentistry. Founded in 1895 by D.D. Palmer in Davenport, Iowa, Chiropractic is based on the anatomical fact that the Nervous System is the Master system of the body. Your Nervous System is made of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. These control the function of every organ, muscle, tissue and cell in your body.

Chiropractors focus on the alignment of the bones and joints of the body, particularly the spine, because of the intimate relationship between the spine and the Nervous System. Your brain and spinal cord are completely encased in and protected by your skull and spine. Disruptions in alignment of the spine can cause vertebral subluxations – a complex of inflammation, nerve flow disruption, and muscle dysfunction that can lead to pain or decreased function in the target area of the nerves affected.

Chiropractors are renowned worldwide for their ability to help patients suffering from back or neck pain, headaches, sciatica, and many other problems. In fact, Consumer Reports recently reported chiropractic to be the most cost-effective treatment for lower back pain. However, chiropractic is about more than just pain relief.
